Nicole Ari Parker (born Nicole Ari Parker) is an American actress who works in the fields of film, television and the theatre. The most famous of her roles is Teri Joe, the flamboyant lawyer from The Showtime show Soul Food. Nikki Kodjoe became her stage name following her marriage. Her acting talent was evident from childhood. An Maryland high-school contest awarded her the top actress prize. In the years following her involvement in theatre and with "The Washington Ballet Company" She was awarded an acting diploma from New York University. The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love, her debut performance in a feature film earned her a lot of respect. This was followed by movies including 'Boogie nights Spark' and Blue Streak. The family was born in Mumbai, India and raised in Nigeria until the age of seven. Contractor was a seasoned traveler who enjoyed world travels and a variety of cultures at a very young age. She attended boarding school in London between seven and nine years of age, and then her family moved to Toronto, Canada, where she lived for the bulk of her youth and early adulthood. Contractor studied and became an expert in classical dancing in Toronto. She was a student at the Etobicoke School of the Arts, a high school for the arts that was specifically designed to be a school in which she studied more than just dance but also drama. Contractor aged 16 at the time she realized that acting would be her career. She had danced for a decade. When she graduated from high school she was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Toronto, where she earned a master's degree in the field of theatre, and a double major in psychology and sociology. Contractor attended the highly-regarded Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada, for Pericles. After a full year of auditions, she was offered the leading role. The production she appeared in received acclaim from Canadian reviewers. The conservatory at Stratford accepts eight men, four women as well as a few additional people to take a 20 weeks of crash courses. Contractor received a guaranteed spot in the following season of productions and was offered the role as Hermia as Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
